Big Data and Enterprise IT are converging into the data driven enterprise, says Sam Grocott, Vice President, Innovation and Strategic Development, EMC Isilon. He elaborates on Isilon’s growth in the region and future plans.
Mobility, big data and collaboration are changing the enterprise IT. How does Isilon fit into this new set up?
EMC sees Big Data and Enterprise IT converging into the data driven enterprise at scale. EMC Isilon has demonstrated continual leadership by adding to Isilon's scalability, performance and ease of use with a number of "firsts" around mobility, collaboration and big data as well as supporting other trends and requirements that we see in the enterprise at scale for security and compliance.
- Isilon is the first and only scale-out solution that natively supports Hadoop HDFS - bringing enterprise availability and reliability to big data analytics while eliminating Hadoop cluster load time with its data-in-place processing.
- EMC's Syncplicity + Isilon for mobility and collaboration is the first and only scale-out solution that provides users with the ease of use and flexibility that they're accustomed to with the security, governance and compliance that IT organisation demands. For the enterprise at scale, this means a single, scalable and secure Isilon cluster can consolidate multiple enterprise file workflows such as home directories, file shares, archive, mobility and big data analytics, eliminating silos and reducing costs.
What further technological shifts do you foresee and how do you think Isilon will keep evolving to be relevant?
Certainly cloud and the emergence of the software defined data centre are two of the major shifts IT is currently undergoing in its evolution. Isilon technology enables organisations to benefit from this evolution by providing a single, scalable infrastructure for the enterprises' complete unstructured data workflows including a native REST/object interface for cloud along with its NAS (NFS/SMB), Mobility and Analytics capabilities.
Isilon is continuing this evolution as the scale-out storage infrastructure for ViPR, the EMC software defined data centre solution that enables heterogeneous provisioning, monitoring, reporting, and data services. With ViPR, organisations can easily integrate Isilon into their NAS file and cloud workflows including Amazon S3, OpenStack and Atmos through a set of compatible APIs.
We're also seeing the rapid growth of unstructured data in markets such as financial services, healthcare and life sciences. As these markets move to scale out to accommodate their growth, they also must continue to meet their industry governance and compliance mandates. Isilon supports this evolution through the continual addition of security and compliance features including Role Based Authentication, Secure Access Zones, SEC compliant WORM, enterprise audit and, encrypted clusters.
