Penang’s UWC achieves 50% increased production with Siemens PLM: interviews

AvantiKumar | March 20, 2014
The manufacturing industry is entering a new digital era, which is transforming the way goods are made, said Siemens PLM's Rajiv Ghatikar.

Penang based manufacturer UWC Holdings [UWC], which produces precision components, electro-mechanical parts as well as fabrication and machine assemblies, has achieved a 50 percent production boost after implementing Siemens PLM's SolidEdge solution, said UWC Holding's managing director, Dato' Ng Chai Eng, in a Computerworld Malaysia interview recently.

Siemens PLM [product lifecycle management] Software vice president and general manager for Asean/Australasia Rajiv Ghatikar said that globally, the manufacturing industry is entering a new era where digitizing and building processes are transforming the way goods are produced.

The economic success of Malaysia and countries in region is directly linked to their ability to manufacture products and increasingly customize production to market segment needs, he said.

UWC's Dato' Ng first answers some questions regarding the implementation followed by Siemens PLM's Ghatikar who offers some background on SolidEdge and the manufacturing sector..

Could you talk about the strategies that led to your opting for the Siemens PLM solution?

Dato' Ng: Our principal activity at UWC Holdings is helping our customers by providing value-added contract manufacturing and assembly solutions, creating reliable automation solutions, and building everything from simple cells to robots to large systems. As we support major original equipment manufacturers and equipment makers in the region, it is our responsibility to maintain our reputation and therefore we need the best equipment and software.

Before implementing Siemens PLM Software's Solid Edge, we were using one of their competitor's 3D modeling software. We realised that we spent more than twice as many hours importing and manipulating data, and as the software did not feature synchronous technology our engineers were spending too much time executing engineering changes using the parametric based design. We needed a solution that provided us with a simple switch, enabling our engineers and designers to work seamlessly across different CAD systems to produce high-quality, lower-cost products fast. The partnership with Siemens PLM Software came at the right time, and we noticed the difference in our operation cycles almost immediately.

What business benefits did you expect from following this route?

After the implementation of Solid Edge, our engineers spent less time studying the design history and dealing with previous errors. It helped us eliminate the need to pre-plan new designs, allowing more time for innovation. We noticed improvements across the board, and Solid Edge helped us significantly improve our design, manufacturing and product development processes.

In addition, in order to stay competitive in today's demanding business environment, we realised that we would need to better meet the evolving needs of our customers. Through the implementation of Siemens PLM's Solid Edge, we were able to significantly reduce product development by 50 percent, design time from four weeks to two weeks and the total manufacturing cycle time by 15 percent.

The overall product development timeline was shortened by minimizing design errors and accelerating our ability to modify and update large product assemblies, resulting in a noticeable increase in operations efficiency. This has enabled UWC to deliver higher quality and better value across the company's product portfolio while improving customer satisfaction thanks to quicker manufacturing turnaround times. Solid Edge has helped the company enhance its already strong market reputation.

Could you talk through some of the implementation steps?
