Nike, Polar and adidas rated as top wearable device vendors

ABI Research says the market for the devices is moving from a specialised field to a broader consumer zone.

Nike, Polar, and adidas-Salomon have come out tops on ABI Research's latest Competitive Assessment ranking report on sports wearable wireless devices.

In the report, vendors are judged by market shares as well as three specific vendor matrices focused on performance and strategy in the sports, fitness, and wellbeing wearable wireless device market.

ABI Research said Nike and Polar have been pioneers in the market for the implementation categories, displaying flexibility and approaches that led to strong market share and notable partnership.

The report also rated Garmin for its strong market share, and its wireless connectivity protocol ANT which it has driven into the successful ANT+ partner alliance.

"The market for wearable wireless devices is in transition moving from specialist proprietary offerings to more open standard connections and devices playing to a far broader consumer market," said Jonathan Collins, author for the ABI Research Competitive Assessment report.

"Established players face growing new competition from startups as well as established players moving into the space from the consumer electronics market. Across the board, device design and company strategy are more important than ever," said Collins.
