Under the guidance of the Infocomm Media Masterplan (IMM), the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) will be pushing forth new ideas and initiatives to drive Singapore's Smart Nation vision.

One idea being explored under the IMM is Smart Logistics, said Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, as he shares some of these plans at the opening of the Infocomm Media Business Exchange 2015 (imbX 2015) earlier today.

According to Dr Yaacob, Smart Logistics allow different parts of the logistics ecosystem to leverage sensory networks in airports and seaports to gain full visibility and insights of their supply chain, tapping on "new technologies" such as mobile computing, Internet of Things, 5G networks and big data analytics.

With the implementation of Smart Logistics, companies can gather insights into their supply chain with updated information on their shipment's environmental conditions as it travels. Additionally, the use of track-and-trace can also help to heighten cargo integrity in the process of the change of custody, as it provides greater clarity in the identity, quantity and the conditions of the cargo being handed over.

Additionally, IDA seeks to launch Smart Nation Tech Challenge in July, an initiative focused on driving innovation and experimentation in Singapore's ICT sector. This series of challenges seek to encourage individuals and businesses to come forward to join the Government in a concerted effort to tap on technology to tackle urban challenges, said Dr Yaacob.

He added that it will begin with a challenge focusing on video analytics. As Singapore develops into a Smart Nation, there is a need for better video analytics techniques to analyse video data for better and more meaningful insights. This will in turn contribute to better service delivery in sectors that underpin a Smart Nation, such as transportation, healthcare, retail and security.

Specifically, the Video Analytics Challenge aims to create or enhance video analytics solutions that can improve planning and operations in the areas of public safety, resource allocation, and situational awareness.

"Experimentation as part of innovation is critical in Singapore's Smart Nation journey. With many different industries and various communities making this journey with us, we have all the right ingredients to achieve the vision. However, we need people to be bold in seeing the future and taking some risk to pursue it," said Steve Leonard, Executive Deputy Chairman, IDA.

"We all need to be open to new ways of tackling current and future problems. We can, and should, be the builders of solutions to global challenges in areas such as health, transport and resources," he added.
