Microsoft rolled out two enhancements to its Lync unified communications tool on 20 June 2013.
The first is connectivity between Lync and Skype and the second is the Lync Room System.
Lync-Skype connectivity includes presence, instant messaging, and voice. Microsoft is expected to add video call federation between Skype and Lync by the end of the year.
In conjunction with device partners Creston, LifeSize, Polycom and SMART, Lync Room System is a meeting room solution, which integrates hardware and software optimised for end-users to join Lync meetings in just seconds. This will be rolled out in most markets in Asia Pacific and Singapore via these partners throughout the rest of the year.
In March this year, Microsoft released Lync mobile apps for key mobile OS platforms, including Windows Phone 8, iOS and Android. The Lync mobile app supports VoIP and video over IP features, and for iPad users, the ability to view shared desktop and application content in a Lync meeting.
"With these new enhancements to Lync 2013, we are rehumanising communications by making it simpler, more ubiquitous and immersive," said Gerald Leo, Business Group Lead, Microsoft Office Division, Microsoft Singapore.
In the Asia Pacific region, Lync customers vary from SMEs to large enterprises including Singapore-based textile manufacturer Ghim Li Group, energy specialist MedcoEnergi Internasional from Indonesia, and Malaysia's KPJ Healthcare.
With Lync, Ghim Li increased collaboration among its 180 employees across Singapore, New York, Hong Kong, and China, and achieved an operational cost saving of more than S$60,000 (US$47,114) per year.
