How Malaysia fits into Dyn's APAC expansion: interview

Following Dyn's Asia Pacific announcement, Computerworld invited the Australian internet performance firm's Asia Pacific MD Martin Ryan to offer a little more backstory.

Dyn Internet Intelligence (DII) is critically important to companies because it provides monitoring, analysis, and planning of the Internet.
 

1. Monitor the Internet for Affecting Events.
There are over 3,000 outages, which occur daily over the Internet. Small events to major disasters can strike critical parts of Internet paths. DII shows when and where problems happen and helps find alternative unaffected paths. On September 15, 2014, a submarine fibre cut occurred on AAG cable near Vung Tau, Vietnam. As a result, regional providers lost as much as 50 percent of their capacity. The estimated time to restoration was 3-4 weeks.

2. Analyse Cloud Performance
Gartner recently found that more than 70 percent of enterprises will be moving apps and services to the cloud in 2015. DII shows how cloud companies serve customers through internet connections. This is especially true for the Asia Pacific region because many cloud companies are new to the region. For instance, Amazon AWS has two hosting locations that could serve the South Korean market - Singapore and Tokyo.  Intuitively, Tokyo, being closer, looks like the best choice. But in this case, DII visualizations show that Singapore provides better performance to South Korea than Tokyo.

3. Plan for Market Expansion
Many corporations are expanding their reach into the Asia Pacific market and will need to invest in infrastructure to reach the market.

Data centres typically cost millions of dollars to build, making location mistakes very costly. DII can help infrastructure planners by providing performance visibility into where to place data centers, see market targeted performance metrics, and try "what-if" location scenarios. To get further accuracy, Dyn Customer Vantage Points can be deployed at data centre locations to get direct performance data to over 1.5 million advertised IP addresses.
