Is the new EMC Data Domain Operating System is fundamentally different from previous iterations?
One of the most important new features of the new Data Domain OS 5.5 is secure multi-tenancy. Secure multi-tenancy enables large enterprises and services providers to offer data protection as-a-service with Data Domain systems in a private or public cloud. With secure multi-tenancy, a Data Domain system can logically isolate data and restrict each tenant's visibility, while allowing read/write access to only their data. In addition, secure multi-tenancy provides management and monitoring by tenant to enable chargeback, trending and other reporting.
To enable customers to consolidate all of their protection storage requirements, we continue to expand Data Domain's work load support. With Data Domain OS 5.5, the Data Domain systems can now support 1 billion small files. This support is made possible through various file system enhancements, including more efficient cleaning and replication. This makes Data Domain a highly scalable platform that can now support any size of archiving environment and is ideal for large enterprises with 200-300 TB of archive data.
When IT isn't able to provide application owners with the visibility and control they need, owners take backups into their own hands by setting up unnecessary silos of storage. EMC addresses this problem with Data Domain Boost for Enterprise Applications. Expanding on the success of DD Boost for Oracle RMAN, EMC introduces Data Domain Boost for SAP, SAP HANA, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM DB2. These integrations empower application owners by enabling them to control their own backups using their native utilities to backup directly to Data Domain systems, which enables IT to eliminate the accidental architecture.

In today's digital age, organisations are seeing a tremendous growth in their data year on year. An EMC study about the Digital Universe suggests that the amount of information between 2010 and 2020 will grow 50 times, reaching 40 zettabytes. This is an unimaginable amount of data which poses a huge challenge to organizations as they build a sustainable backup infrastructure. Key concerns that organisations will need to address with their backup infrastructure include being able to meet backup and recovery windows, escalation of storage costs, meeting legal and compliance risk requirements and bridging the skill gap required to manage these environments.
EMC's Blueprint for Backup Architecture is a service that assesses customers' backup, recovery and archiving environment end-to-end. This service identifies performance and process gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The final deliverable is a series of actionable recommendations aligned with a roadmap for remediation/closure of identified gaps.
