The explosive growth of data in Asia provides both opportunities and challenges, says Jeetu Patel, vice president and general manager of the Syncplicity Business Unit, Information Intelligence Group (IIG) at EMC.

What kind of opportunities and challenges do you see in the AP market?

Asia consumes technology at a slower pace than the Western hemisphere. One of the reason is that they may not have sufficient resources to invest in technology at the same level, so the SaaS model becomes an excellent way to bring the Asian market up to speed. SaaS allows organisations to consume technology at an innovative pace, but they do not need resources to maintain.

Another challenge we see, is the explosive growth of data in Asia. According to a new study by IDC, the digital universe will reach 40 zettabytes by 2020. Additionally, by 2020, emerging markets will supplant the developed world as the main producer of the world's data. According to the study, we also find that the amount of data that requires protection is growing faster than the digital universe itself, yet levels of protection are not keeping pace. The challenge and opportunity is to be able to provide enterprises with a safe solution that helps them manage their sync and share options for their employees.

According to research firms, the market opportunity for file, sync, share and collaboration solutions is US$4.5 to 5 billion. With more than 350 million users of Outlook Exchange, we think this will be a big opportunity for enterprises to provide their employees with an application that enables their employees to remain productive and at the same time have a consumer-grade experience.
