Data is the new black

Yves de Montcheuil | Feb. 2, 2015
The pendulum keeps swinging: IT used to be data-centric; applications commoditised data, but are now incapable of keeping up. Data centricity is now trendier than ever.

What happens to the data that applications are used to owning? There will be a transitory period during which applications keep ownership of their "core" data. This will happen both out of habit/legacy, but also for practical reasons: The big data infrastructure is not mature and trusted enough to hold mission-critical enterprise data. It will take a few more iterations on the architecture to reach this point.

There will however be a time where all data is unified again and made available to applications as a strategic resource. At this stage the pendulum will have swung back to data centricity. And data will become -- again -- fashionable. Data will be the new black.
