The demand for apps in the enterprise is at an all-time high, as businesses recognise that the advent of a mobile-first world means turning to apps for generating revenue, increasing customer loyalty, and improving efficiency.
In fact, Gartner forecasts enterprise application software spending to double from US$300B in 2013 to over US$575B by the end of 2018. Tools that can provide support in fast paced environments, development and deployment of apps more rapidly are crucial to help bridge the gap between mobile app demand and supply.
In this Q&A interview, Jerry Rulli, President of OpenEdge Business Unit at Progress, talks about his general insights on the web application development market in the region, including security issues and future trends; as well as how it can actually help businesses to foster growth.
Can you give us a global overview of the web application development market, especially its landscape in the Asia region? And what do you think are some factors that are propelling the growth of this market?
The web application market is going through a significant change, and through this evolution, it's playing an increasingly important role in a company's competitive advantage. The impact that application development has on the bottom line now, and how this can drive innovation is more visible than ever.
According to Gartner, we are witnessing the "birth of a new AD that spearheads business innovation". We are also seeing more advanced development tools that enable rapid application development, eliminating the need to code from scratch emerging. As web application development continues to evolve rapidly, the capabilities within the industry keep increasing.
Undoubtedly, we are seeing the growth of the application development market both on a global and Asia Pacific level. A large factor driving this growth is the consumerisation of IT. This goes beyond employees bringing their tablets and smartphones into work and expecting IT to support this and enable corporate access. Employees now expect each application to deliver a seamless experience like consumer apps like GrabTaxi or Uber that are developed today.
The market is also seeing growth propelled by an increasing demand for a multi-channel user experience - it's not about mobile or web anymore. Users are increasingly using different devices to access their applications and developers need to look at how to deliver a seamless experience across all devices and platforms.
We are also witnessing a growing need for code-free development tools that enable end-users to create and manage their applications. This empowers both IT and business stakeholders to collaborate strategically and focus on innovation rather than having IT spend time rewriting hard codes. The importance of integration has never been more crucial than now - as businesses move their processes to the cloud while leaving some in-house, application communication has also been a key driver in the industry as applications must deliver the ability to communicate with each other.
