SINGAPORE, 10 OCTOBER 2011 - BMC Software believes that the management layer is the real challenge in cloud computing, and is making big bets on this area. Suhas Kelkar, CTO, Asia Pacific & senior director, incubator team, BMC Software, updates Computerworld Singapore on the vendor's efforts in the cloud.
BMC is known as a business service management (BSM) specialist. And where do you see BMC in the cloud computing business?
A couple of years ago - when we moved aggressively into the cloud computing space - we launched what we called Dynamic BSM, a vision to address the need for more disciplined IT management processes.
We strongly believe that for businesses to be successful with their IT strategies, they have to increase the level of maturity of their IT operations. And cloud computing acts as a catalyst in driving this maturity.
IT organisations will need to harness private, public and hybrid cloud infrastructures to ensure optimal resource utilisation, and ensure that all IT undertakings meet business objectives. We realised the Dynamic BSM vision with our Cloud Lifecycle Management (CLM) solution in 2009, and then expanded with new capabilities recently. With CLM, enterprises can deliver business services and not just virtual machines, secure multi-tenancy based on deep network integrations and ensure intelligent placement of cloud services.
CLM also provides robust policy-based ongoing operations, support for heterogeneity from physical to virtual, multi-hypervisor, public cloud integrations, and the ability to build core value add capabilities to differentiate cloud services.
We believe the real challenge in cloud computing is at the management layer, and that is why we have invested significant resources to build the "killer app" for businesses.
Can you give a brief update on the R&D activities BMC have embarked on this year?
We recently introduced an updated version of our Cloud Lifecycle Management solution as well as a self-service version of BMC Control-M, our popular workload automation solution - both of which were developed by our in-house R&D teams. They are considered our two most successful products launched in our company's recent history.
We also have a unique partnership with Salesforce.com whereby we offer customers our bestselling Remedy IT service management solution on the Force.com platform. We have turned our focus to SaaS as we see a lot of growth opportunities in this area in the next three to five years. IDC predicts that by 2012, 85 per cent of new vendors will be focused on SaaS services.
Can you also explain BMC's technology roadmap in the next 12 to 24 months?
We see that the explosion of mobile devices and social media in the consumer marketplace is driving demand for such services in the workplace. For example, we recognise that the current mobility trend is gaining traction among enterprises and this paradigm shift in business IT brings about opportunities for us over the next several years. Our Remedy helpdesk system has been bolstered with the recent acquisition of Aeroprise, an enterprise mobile application company.
