BLOG: The Smart Enterprise: Simplifying the Mobile Application Management (MAM) solution

As mobile devices are more frequently used in the workplace to manage notes, edit documents, and sync files on mobile devices, it is essential for enterprise IT to ensure mobile apps are compatible and safe, to protect corporate data, while enabling users to take advantage of the powerful benefits mobile apps provide.

Typically, Mobile Application Management (MAM) solutions today involve six or more steps - identify the app, execute contracts with the app developer, retrieve the app binaries, apply the security wrapper, verify the app and then deploy it for users in their corporate app store. This process must be repeated when the app or mobile operating system is updated, or when the app security software development kit (SDK) changes.

However, this process can be simplified in just three steps:

1.      Create an Enterprise App Marketplace

An Enterprise App Marketplace gives enterprise IT full control of the apps downloaded by employees for use in the workplace. Employees, on the other hand, are assured of the quality and security of apps that comply with IT policies, enabling BYO and multi-device compliance, coupled with significant cost benefits.

2.      Adopt a comprehensive mobility portfolio

The BYO trend has increased the number of access points enterprise IT are required to secure, which can only be holistically managed with a mobility management portfolio that secures the device, app and data from a single point of control. A comprehensive mobility portfolio includes the full range of mobile solutions, ranging from device management to native mobile apps for e-mail, web access, collaboration and data sharing, as well as desktop virtualization for seamless access to Windows apps and desktops.

3.      Enable a mobile workforce  

As the workplace and workstyles evolve, enterprises need to ensure that corporate apps and software are well-suited to alternative work platforms. This can be fulfilled by adopting apps that replicate on mobile devices, without compromising functionality and user-experience. These apps should be delivered as a cloud service as it enables enterprises to manage costs, extend capacity on demand, reduce lead-time for procuring and configuring hardware, and decrease hardware sizing risk that comes with fluctuating loads. 

Workplace of the future

The workplace of the future will be characterised by the end-user taking centre stage in the enterprise IT equation as they would become increasingly dominant in deciding the type of work device, apps, as well as where and how they will access the corporate data and network.

By simplifying the MAM solution, users will no longer have to search for apps, and instead can simply open up their corporate app store on their mobile devices to find a list of enterprise-enabled apps that have been pre-selected by IT, for their use. The enterprise IT team of the future will also have to leap beyond the day-to-day management and instead, create greater strategic value for the entire organisation.
