Apple Music launches to take on startups like Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and Rdio

Apple Music launched today posing a threat to the revenues of music streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, Radio and Google Play.

The world's richest company is offering people a free three-month trial of its new music-streaming service, which costs £9.99 a month.

Apple Music plans to become the go-to music destination by combining a plethora of features, including a music streaming service, an always on global radio spearheaded by former Radio 1 presenter Zane Lowe and a social network for music fans to follow artists they're interested in.

Music streaming market leader Spotify counts 75 million customers in its books but Apple will hope to steal many of those away in coming months, posing a threat to the very existence of the Swedish startup.

Smaller firms like Deezer and Rdio could be among the first to feel the impacts of Apple's might, with Deezer boasting 16 million users (globally) and Rdio boasting 500,000 in the US.

Apple will look to take market share from these relatively new companies by capitalising on its large customer base, which includes 700 million iPhone users globally.

At 4pm [BST] today, the company rolled out iOS 8.4, its latest iPhone update, which includes the new Apple Music service.

Beats 1 started broadcasting as the software update was made available but there were some initial teething problems, with some users reporting a bad connection and others complaining at the DJ's song choices.
