Nevertheless, many police forces and public safety agencies are realising that social media is effective to conduct a two-way dialogue with citizens, initiate a more rapid response and acquire better intelligence to support investigations.
Citizens agree, and in a recent Accenture pulse survey almost three-quarters (72 per cent) of respondents said they believe social media can be an effective tool to report crimes, generate suspect leads and support police investigations; 81 percent of respondents said they would most likely use Facebook as the tool to do so.
2) Analytics seem to be an interesting technology area for law enforcement agencies to explore. Can you give details on how analytics can be applied within the police force?
Most government agencies are now using analytics, viewing it as a critical tool to transform information into valuable insights on their operations and customers.
Law enforcement agencies can harness predictive analytics to shift from what has traditionally been a heavily reactive approach to policing (respond to a crime) to a more proactive approach based on insights and analysis of where and when crimes may occur.
All police forces are now realising the value of an intelligence-led approach across their operations and investigations.
One of the greatest challenges for police forces is to effectively manage the vast amount of available information and then harness this information to enable informed decision making across their operations and investigations.
All forces should seek to utilise and draw upon a diverse set of information and intelligence sources to support their work, carefully managing these and making use of analytics to drive intelligence insights to enable greater predictive policing.
Through the use of advanced analytics techniques police forces can:
- Reduce costs by identifying wasteful or redundant processes and drive process excellence across both operations and investigations
- Better manage information to drive better policing outcomes (predict crime peaks, crime mapping, remove information silos, information management systems to support operations and investigations)
- Improve service delivery - maximise police resources to ensure they are available where and when needed.
- Optimise supply chains, increase planning efficiency, improve demand forecasting and refine procurement, sourcing and asset management
