Philippine’s BPO sector moves towards data privacy law compliance

The National Privacy Commission has identified the BPO industry as a key sector that needs to comply with the data privacy law.

Member companies of the Contact Centre Association of the Philippines (CCAP) are now in the new phase of their education programmes towards fully complying with the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

"Right now, our concerns are how it will affect our industry and the Philippine economy, our people and the way we do business. Moving forward, it will be more about making sure everyone complies," said Jojo Uligan, president of CCAP, in a report by Philippine Star yesterday (23 July 2017).

"[Previously], it was really more about people getting to understand what data privacy is all about and why it is important. Now that we know how important it is, [we now need to learn] how to implement it or if there are things we need to change or innovate to be able to comply with certain provisions," Uligan added.

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has identified the BPO industry as one of the key sectors that needs to comply with the data privacy law since its core activity focuses on processing personal information, according to a report by the Business Mirror. Other priority sectors include the government, telecommunications, public schools, and healthcare.

The BPO sector remains as one of the top growth industries in the Philippines in terms of online hiring. The country experienced a 23 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth in online hiring for the IT, telecommunications, and business process outsourcing (BPO) professionals between May 2016 and May 2017.
