Deloitte CIO Survey 2013 indicates majority understand how IT can support innovation strategies.

Business transformation is a top priority for organisations, according to Deloitte CIO Survey 2013.

The majority (75%) of CIOs understand how IT functions could support their organisation's innovation strategies. This is a positive sign as IT department is currently under pressure to innovate as enterprises focus more on digital and new business requirements.

The CIOs in Southeast Asia find it challenging to align the role of the IT function and the business. Findings of the survey show that IT leaders should make efforts to understand the businesses needs.

IT leaders should also find and retain people with business insight and identify innovative solutions required to address the needs of their business customers.

"We are confident there are many untapped opportunities lying ahead for the CIO," said Eric Peffer, director of Deloitte SEA Technology Advisory. "They have never played a more prominent role in the boardroom, nor have they had more opportunities to get closer to the business strategy than they have now."

Transformation of CIO's role

Deloitte predicts CIO's role will be transformed over the next few years into a more strategic advisory role. CIO's will be focusing more on developing business strategy and more than a third of CIOs consider their next role to be that of COO or CEO.

The majority (78%) of IT budgets have increased or stayed the same since last year and about half (42%) of budgets are being put towards change or growth activities.

More than half of all respondents agree a lot can be done to improve the IT function's effectiveness in facilitating business change and growth. 45% said their data and insight capabilities within the IT function need improving.

About 60% of CIOs said that they are experiencing problems recruiting staff and 33% said their current role does not provide them with development and job opportunities for a fulfilling career in IT.

"While we still have some way to go, especially in terms of improving the IT business relationship, the perception of IT is changing as more organisations realise the strategic importance of this function," added Peffer. "This is a positive move in the right direction."
