This conflict is taking shape with operations personnel getting in the driver's seat. Issues can arise in several areas such as islands of technologies which cannot be integrated to give a corporate-level picture. For example, smaller companies prefer a rapidly deployable ERP on the cloud, while a larger one prefers a traditional solution involving time, money, and energy. Operations may want a workable quick-fix technique for its sales personnel while the business side may be paranoid about data security. Orthodox and radical approaches will both fail.
CIOs have to take a practical approach between extremes and work out acceptable compromises. This is where creativity and innovation play a part.
