SINGAPORE, 23 MARCH 2011 – Indian IT services company HCL Technologies has evacuated 70 per cent of its staff and their families from Japan in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the country's eastern coast on 11 March.
“HCL has 265 employees in Japan based out of Tokyo and Osaka,” said Shami Khorana,
president, global head of sales and marketing, CAC Executive Sponsor, HCL Technologies. “Last week, we helped about 70 per cent of our staff to move out of Japan along with their families.”
According to HCL sources, the Japan market is served by about 1600 HCL employees—the majority of them based in offshore locations.
Despite the evacuation, confirmed a HCL source, there has been no impact on the company’s operations.
After the earthquake, HCL offered its employees three options: they could work from home, they could work out of an alternate location like Osaka, China, Singapore or
India on Japan timings, or they could proceed on leave in consultation with their manager and spend time with their families inside or outside Japan. Around 170 of HCL’s Japan employees chose the last option. Most of them are from India.
Japan forms part of HCL’s rest of the world (ROW) market. The outsourcing company says ROW is the fastest growing market for HCL. In the calendar year 2010, HCL recorded revenues of more than US$3 billion, of which US$461 million came under ROW.
