Embracing digital transformation is about being great change leaders: IDC's Joseph Pucciarelli

Joseph Pucciarelli, Group VP and IT Executive Advisor, IDC, talks about digital transformation and how companies can overcome IT investment challenges.

Q: What do you think are some characteristics of successful IT leaders?

When we think about our role as IT leaders, we immediately go to our job as IT leaders to provide sustainable high-quality IT operations. If you want to keep your job, you have to deliver consistent high-quality services. But if you look at what distinguishes the individuals from around the world, or the ones who get promoted, or the ones who get significant increases in salary, it's the ability to drive change - that is what is so valuable.

Yes, you have to deliver sustainable operations; but what will get you promoted? What will give you more opportunities? It's the ability to be a change leader in your organisation.

Q: What would be your advice to business leaders who are about to embark on a digital transformation journey?

A: For business leaders who are embarking on digital transformation, the single most important thing to understand is that they are changing the fabric of an organisation, and that is a very hard thing to do.

Organisations like people get comfortable so it's not necessarily about the technology or digital transformation - it's about change. They need to be great change leaders because digital transformation is profound and serves as a very interesting test of their leadership skills. Our advice is, think about digital transformation in the context of driving and affecting change and how you can do that as a business leader.

Q: What is one key point that you would like the delegates from the CIO Summit to bring home from your presentation?

A: I think the single most important thing for people to reflect on is, they've come to this event, they've invested a day, what are they going to do with that knowledge? As Confucius says, the most difficult part of a journey is the first step.

As you think about and reflect upon your personal challenges, keep in mind that the hardest thing to do is to start the process of change. And that's we encourage people to do. It's simply to start the process and recognise that they are not going to get everything perfect, but that's okay. Recognise it as a process and as a journey.
