How can CIOs benefit from LinkedIn? The site makes it easier for CIOs to connect and network, gain industry insights and keep abreast of technology trends, hire the best technology talent and find prospective partners. Here are 10 ways you can take advantage of LinkedIn:

1.       Build your online profile

Make sure that your LinkedIn profile is complete, accurate and updated at all times. You should add a photo, detail your experience and summarise your employment history. With a strong profile, you are most likely to rank high on search engines. You can also list the technology and management skills that you have gained over the years in your profile through the LinkedIn Skills tool.

2.       Grow your connections

Build connections with trusted contacts and industry professionals. You can import your existing contacts to LinkedIn or you can use the people you may know feature to connect with past and current colleagues, clients and partners. You can broaden your connections by connecting proactively with people in your industry.

3.       Showcase your knowledge

Demonstrate your knowledge and skills by being active online. Share interesting articles or your blog content through the status update. You can also link your Twitter account with LinkedIn. Position yourself as an expert in your subject area by participating in relevant groups and also responding to questions using the Answers feature.

4.       Gain industry insights

There are over one million groups on LinkedIn. You can join a relevant group to engage with like-minded CIOs or other professionals who can provide you support and answer your specific questions. Joining groups which are related to your industry or specific technology areas is also a great way to make new connections. Whether these connections are local or international, having a wide and diverse group will serve you well. You can find potential partners through groups, as the group members have the ability to directly message each other, even if they aren't directly connected. You could also use the LinkedIn Signal tool to filter and extract the most relevant information shared by your network. You can also follow companies that you are interested in, tracking the latest news and information about companies of interest or competitors.

5.       Improve productivity through LinkedIn mobile

Access LinkedIn on the move through iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps enabling you to keep in touch with your network wherever you are. Search for others on LinkedIn to help recall and connect with business acquaintances at events and conferences. You can use the LinkedIn mobile application to pull up background details of the person you are meeting on-the-go, putting you in good stead for a great introduction and conversation points.
