The need for CISOs

Nurdianah Md Nur | June 21, 2016
We find out what it's like to be a CISO from Sean Valcamp, Avnet's CISO.

Could you share with me today's state of security due to the rise of technologies such as cloud, mobile and IoT? How should CISOs protect their companies from these threats?
Solutions such as cloud, mobility, and IoT will greatly increase the number of devices that will be connected to the Internet in the next five years. With this changing technology landscape, CISOs should not lose sight of fundamental security practices. They must know:

  1. Who is connected to the network
  2. What is connected to the network
  3. Where a device is connected to the network
  4. How is a device connected to the network

Keeping these four items aligned, CISOs will manage risks accordingly.

How do you foresee the security landscape changing in future? And what will CISOs of 2020 look like?
CISOs can expect a lot of growth in devices connected to networks. They should make sure their practices can scale accordingly to support such growth in security operations and incident response. The types of devices will also change as we will see more data collecting sensors on networks. Sound data security practices will need to continue and evolve to protect data within corporate data centers, co-locations, and cloud providers.
