Dealing with disruptions, the PayPal way

Nurdianah Md Nur | Sept. 16, 2016
The only way forward is to innovate, and this applies to even disruptors.

What are the key technology projects you're currently working on? How do these projects contribute to your overall business/technology goals?
As commerce rapidly evolves and moves into new contexts, PayPal continues to develop the technology advances to stay ahead: starting with online commerce and then mobile, now retail, and looking forward at entirely new contexts such as voice-activation and commerce within messaging applications, like Facebook Messenger. To do this, we're focused on modernising our core infrastructure and platform to accelerate innovation at PayPal. The structural platform changes help enable better availability with millions of dollars of cost savings, as well as sets the foundation for future innovation.

The payment space is getting crowded - besides FinTech startups, tech companies such as Apple and Google are also vying for a piece of the pie. How is PayPal addressing such disruptions?
There's extraordinary opportunity in the payments industry, so it's getting a lot of attention and there are more players entering the space. However most of the players today are only vying for one sliver of the pie. PayPal is the whole pie: we are an end-to-end payments solution. PayPal is in a unique position in that we're not just an agnostic payment platform, a gateway, a merchant account, a payment method, a digital wallet, a payment processor, a peer-to-peer solution, an enabler of more affordable and easy remittances, or provider of credit solutions to consumers and merchants. We are every single one of these things, integrated end-to-end in a platform that delivers more seamless commerce in a hyper-connected world.

This is especially key now, as we are in the greatest transformative period in the history of money and financial services. Within the financial sector, we know there will be more innovation in the next five years than we've seen in the last 50 years.

At PayPal, we are singularly focused on delivering digital payments that are secure, efficient, and affordable. So we not only tap into the fintech ecosystem to develop the best foundation and solutions, such as powering Xoom to remit money, pay bills and reload mobile phones around the world, but also work with the incredible talent within our global PayPal technology centers to constantly innovate for the future. This helps ensure that PayPal continues to succeed as commerce moves into new contexts.

What's next for PayPal?
We're laser-focused on continuing to modernise our platform, and look at ways to innovate faster through the advancements of things like bots, DevOps, containerisation and biometrics. At the same time, we're always on the lookout for new technologies that will enable us to better serve our customers, improve the safety and security of the payment experience, and promote greater financial inclusion.
