Harry D. Moseley, CIO and managing director at KPMG, is very clear on the best way to shake up an organization and offer innovative solutions: through its people.
"One of the major shifts today is the flattening of organizations irrespective of whether [they're] in IT or sales or leadership," Moseley says. "I'm a huge believer in that. To have senior levels interact with all the levels of an organization can make an enormous difference in that organization."
KPMG is the U.S. arm of KPMG International, a global audit, tax and advisory firm. Moseley, 60, who works out of the company's Montvale, N.J., office, oversees 750 IT staffers, an increase of 29% over the previous year. He sees a recipe for success in attracting workers from a variety of backgrounds who can learn from one another.
"I believe in having a diverse workforce made up of young people who have a fantastic academic education and veterans who have strong discipline, mixed with people with great technology experience," Moseley says. "Experienced employees bring a lot of value to the table from their previous roles and opportunities. . . . Young adults, on the other hand, do not have that experience to leverage and therefore they will think out of the box."
What this means is success for both the organization and for each employee. "I firmly believe," says Moseley, "that the accomplishments I've managed to achieve throughout my career are all as a consequence of great people supporting me."
