UK Government hiring deputy CTO to support Liam Maxwell

The maximum salary for the position is up to £117,400

The Cabinet Office is looking to hire a deputy chief technology officer to support the government's ongoing technology reforms.

The chosen candidate will work alongside CTO Liam Maxwell within the Government Digital Service and the Efficiency and Reform Group, but will have influence across all departments in Whitehall.

According to an online advertisement, the deputy CTO will be paid between £60,000 and £117,400 per annum.

The notice reads: "There has never been a better opportunity to transform the government's use of technology. Many major IT contracts are about to expire, we have an effective controls process in place and the technology landscape is swinging our way."

Maxwell has previously stated that when the government's largest outsourcing contracts come to an end over the next two to three years it will be looking to introduce shorter contract terms, as well as more competition and innovation through the use of SMEs.

There is already evidence of these reforms within some departments, such as HMRC, where the department's multi-billion pound Aspire contract has been restructured to save money and support a more agile approach to IT development.

The deputy-CTO will be responsible for the following:

Running the technology leadership function of the Office of the Government Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), defining and upholding the UK government technology position

Representing the CTO across government, building relationships with departments and establishing stronger engagement between departments and GDS

Maintaining and developing the technology leadership vision for government

Building the case to drive forward the wider business transformation of government through technology, identifying opportunities to accelerate the pace of change

In similar news, the Government Digital Service recently announced that it was hiring 14 technical advisers to help address a skills gap identified by the National Audit Office.
