Senior executive makes a comeback to grow a bigger market.

An industry veteran and former top executive of global IT provider Tech Mahindra is making a comeback as a top executive for a bigger market.

Ajit Velankar, who was once Tech Mahindra's regional head director for Australia and New Zealand, has recently been named head of Southeast Asia and North Asia.

Based in Singapore, Velankar is expected to pursue Tech Mahindra's goals after recent investments in the region, which is said to be one of the growth areas given that other continents are struggling with trillions of dollars in debts.

Mumbai-educated Velankar has more than 25 years of industry experience across diverse geographies, Tech Mahindra said. He was previously with MphasiS Ltd, an HP Company, responsible for Asia Pacific and Japan. He also worked at Tata Unisys , Siemens, GE, and Eastman Kodak.

As head of Southeast Asia and North Asia, Velankar is expected to expand Tech Mahindra's business across emerging markets, such as China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Just recently, Tech Mahindra said it will set up an office in the Philippines, which is said to be one of its closest competitors as a business process outsourcing (BPO) destination.

Tech Mahindra said the Asia Pacific region is a high potential market for the company. But while the company is bullish on emerging markets, it said it will continue to entrench its prime position in mature markets.

Tech Mahindra provides solutions and services mainly to the telecommunications industry and is India's fifth largest software exporter. It is part of the US$12.5 billion Mahindra Group in partnership with British Telecommunications.
