"I think there's a lot of downsides to that view," he argued. "Some companies may go that way but it's at their own peril… My point is it's much beyond passive archiving or even data mining. It's exploiting the knowledge from that data."
CAIOs would help set strategy for using artificial intelligence throughout the company, while also looking for new areas where it could be put to use. A.I. executives also would put a focus on hiring artificial intelligence specialists.
They also would monitor A.I. strategy and use, and make course corrections as needed. That alone, would be a lot of work, according to Chien.
"If [companies] don't understand the relationship of A.I. to their future core business, then they will have trouble competing," Chien said. "If they don't have a chief A.I. officer, they either are covering it or they don't' see how important it is. If they don't see how important it is, then that's just not good."
