Malaysian telco Maxis has awarded RM5.68 million (US$1.87 million) in scholarships to 27 undergraduate and postgraduate Malaysian students and committed more than RM37.9 million (US$12.48 million) in scholarships to a total of 209 recipients.
On 18 October 2012, Maxis chairman YM Raja Tan Sri Dato' Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda presented the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Awards (MSEA) as part of its on-going commitment towards education, talent and leadership development, he said. The recipients, 22 undergraduates and five post-graduates, will now go on to pursue courses in their chosen fields at top universities, both locally and abroad.
The MSEA recipients were selected by a panel of distinguished judges, which comprised Professor Dato' Dr Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid, deputy vice-chancellor of INTI-UC Laureate International University, Professor Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar, director of The Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT - Akademi Kepimpinan Pengajian Tinggi) of the Ministry of Higher Education and Associate Professor Dr Stefanie Pillai, director, Centre for Industrial Training and Relations, University Malaya.
Arshad said: "Maxis was founded as an organisation with its business mission enshrined in service to the nation and its people. As an organisation and market leader, we are committed to harnessing the power of telecommunications technology to address the needs of society and enrich lives."
"The MSEA underscores Maxis' commitment to education and ultimately nation building," he said. "Contributing towards building the nation's talent pool is one area that is close to our heart. Our scholarships, aimed at our employees' and customers' children are designed to provide talented and outstanding young Malaysians with the opportunity to realise their fullest potential."
During the ceremony, a forum entitled 'Nurturing Tomorrow's Leaders' was held. It was moderated by Priya Narayanan, a MSEA scholar from the 2009 batch of recipients. The panellists for the forum - Sandip Das, Datuk Dr Roziah and Dr Stefanie - spoke about leadership qualities, nurturing talent and the role of corporate citizens like Maxis in contributing towards developing the country's talent pool.
Through the scholarship, several recipients have gained admittance to prestigious universities in Malaysia and other parts of the world, including Universiti Malaya Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Monash University, International Medical University, the London School of Economics, King's College of London, University of Oxford, Imperial College of London, Columbia University and Harvard Business School, in the various fields of their choice.
The Maxis MSEA was initiated in 2005, in an effort to nurture a forward-thinking and progressive new generation of Malaysians. It is open to young and outstanding Malaysians who have gained admittance to top universities, both locally and abroad. To date, including the 27 recipients today, Maxis has committed more than RM37.9 million in scholarships to a total of 209 recipients.
