Malaysia's Universiti Teknikal Melaka (UTeM) has signed a deal to use IBM technologies for research and development into security software engineering and testing as another step in the university's vision of establishing a software engineering research hub in the Southern Region of Malaysia.

During the official signing of the agreement, Professor Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahibuddin, UTeM vice chancellor, said IBM's Bluemix and SoftLayer technologies will be used for mobile development.

Prof Dr Shahrin said this new collaboration was a step along from when UTeM worked with the IBM Corporate Services Corp (CSC) programme in Melaka in 2012. In that project, the CSC team consulted with the state's health department and World Youth Foundation and participated in a knowledge sharing dialogue at UTeM.

Since then, IBM has worked closely with UTeM's Innovative Software System and Services research group led by Dr Massila Kamalrudin to pursue joint activities, he said.

"The assets and expertise from IBM Academic Initiative will help UTeM further its skills and knowledge in ICT, " said Prof Dr Shahrin, adding that UTeM also intended to form a cloud-based testing laboratory as part of its vision of becoming a hub of software engineering research within the Southern Region of Malaysia and to be among IBM Centre of Excellent (CoE) for Research.

IBM Malaysia chief financial officer Wong Chiun Chiek represented IBM at the signing ceremony.
