How DepEd is digitalising Philippines’ education sector

Adrian M. Reodique | June 2, 2017
Aida Yuvienco, CIO of DepEd, discusses how her organisation is leveraging ICT to improve teaching and learning, communication, governance planning, and operations, at the CIO Conference 2017.

"Data from these systems are now being used to produce dashboards for planning and decision making. We now have business intelligence (BI) tools and analytics [to help us] produce these dashboards for our executives, education managers, and planners," said Yuvienco.

Besides that, the department started working on the enterprise Human Resource Information System (eHRIS) last month to capture and consolidate their employees' data. Yuvienco said they have collected information of their 167,000 employees so far, and aim to complete it by end of July.

Automating processes to improve operations

According to Yuvienco, DepEd is streamlining and automating its processes to increase efficiencies in their organisations.

"We are now putting in place systems that will draft deliveries of IT, science and math equipment, as well as books and other learning resources. This necessarily requires the involvement and participation of concerned DepEd vendors, who directly provide updates on their contract deliverables. This system is SMS-based," she said.

Yuvienco added they have also embedded workloads in the automated processes to improve turnaround times and accuracies in the organisation, starting with the personnel services.

In conclusion, Yuvienco highlighted that management support and employee cooperation enabled all their digital transformation projects. "[Everything] we have done as part of digitally transforming DepEd has been possible because of two things: 1. support from executives when it comes to approving ICT programmes and plans, as well as issuing covering directives and policies; and 2. Having the full cooperation and commitment of the field personnel who really embrace the information systems that we brought to them."
