By equipping the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) computer engineering lab with new Cisco equipment, ICT services firm Dimension Data has boosted the lab's ability to give Malaysian computer engineering students with industry-grade practical experience.

This initiative, which also builds on Dimension Data's expansion into the education sector, involved the implementation of four Cisco Network modules, two Cisco Supervisor modules, two Cisco switches, four Cisco chassis switches, one Cisco firewall as well as two racks.

PDSC's chief executive officer, Muhamed Ali Hajah Mydin, said, "The rapid change in technology and its impact towards the industry prompts training centres like PSDC to constantly stay abreast with the latest developments. We are glad to have partners and IT solutions expertise like Dimension Data to offer avenues and the right facilities to equip our students with the practical experience necessary to meet industrial standards and demands, providing them with a competitive edge in the marketplace."

"As PSDC operates in a tripartite model involving the Government, Industry and Academia, our mission is to support the manufacturing and services industries and provide them with up-to-date training and education programs to ensure that their workforce is trained with the required skillsets," said Muhamed Ali. "We look forward to work closer with Dimension Data to further improve the quality of education, with the vision of advancing the local ICT industry at large."

He said the equipment provided by Dimension Data will especially benefit students in Computer Engineering (CE), as well as other relevant courses, and will help support them in obtaining their Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.

"It is mandatory for training centres to adapt to new teaching methodologies and technologies guided by industrial trends, and be prepared with the latest amenities to train graduates for the increasingly demanding marketplace," said Dimension Data Malaysia's chief executive officer, Henrick Choo.

"As technology evolves and develops in a rapid pace, there is a need for IT firms to work hand-in-hand with training centres to constantly improve the level of competency and professionalism, and Dimension Data is proud to be an enabler in this instance," said Choo.

This initiative is also the first collaboration with an educational institute in Penang, he said. Dimension Data has recently supported another leading private institution's CISCO lab [MMU - Multimedia University ] with equipment, aiming to improve students' knowledge and exposure with the latest technological development through practical exposure.

Established in 1989, Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) is the first tripartite, industry-led skills training and education centre in Malaysia.
