Cisco-ITE Partner for New World Workforce

F.Y. Teng | Aug. 4, 2011
The world’s leading networking company and Singapore technical education institution jointly open interactive and global learning laboratories.

Cisco Systems (USA) Pte Ltd and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) of Singapore announced on Thursday (August 4, 2011) “the development of a connected learning environment at the [latter’s] campus,” ITE College West, in the western Singapore suburb of Choa Chua Kang.

The environment referred to is the ITE-Cisco Collaboration Technologies Center, which is made up of learning labs specifically designed for information and communications technology classes. The centre hosts key collaboration technologies by Cisco, among them TelePresence and WebEx.

“The ITE-Cisco Collaboration Technologies Centre…will be a strategic tool for us to engage our global education partners for joint project collaboration and knowledge sharing and research,” said Bruce Poh, Director and CEO of the ITE, with reference to the announcements on Thursday. “The system will allow us to have seamless, real-time communications and ‘face-to-face’ discussions with anyone with anyone with compatible systems, anywhere.”

The centre is only one just one aspect of the latest announcements in the longstanding partnership between the networking giant and the institution. They are also co-developing curricula and certifications, and running internship and industrial attachment programmes. A joint Cisco-ITE certificate will be offered to students who do a module on collaboration technologies based on content from the Cisco Networking Academy, which runs a distance-learning programme on the development, deployment and use of current Internet technologies. Also lined up are three-month internships for students from Networking Academy-related programmes, and industrial attachments for ITE staff with Cisco and its partners. In addition, every year Cisco is sponsoring up to hundred ITE students pursuing CCNA and CCENT certification.

“Cisco is very proud to be providing this next-generation education technology and support to ITE as we, together, develop new and innovative ways to help students build skills that map to in-demand job roles,” said General Manager of Asia South, Cisco, Irving Tan.
