Amazon Web Services offers certification for cloud computing

Clients will gain higher level of assurance in services as distinct AWS best practices manifest

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) has launched a certification programme to recognise graduates who have demonstrated the standard knowledge and skills necessary to competently build and maintain applications and services on the AWS cloud.

To achieve the AWS certification, individuals must hurdle an exam that focuses on a particular area of proficiency.

This year, the first available exam-the "AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate Level" certification-tests the skills required by technical professionals and solutions architects engaged in the application design and development on AWS.

Certifications for systems operations (SysOps) administration and developers and other role-based certifications will be offered later this year.

AWS certification exams are given in testing centres in more than 100 countries and 750 testing locations around the world.

AWS said that the speed with which cloud computing is being embraced worldwide necessitates a certification system.

Cloud adoption

"With cloud computing being quickly adopted by organisations of all sizes around the world, in-depth training programmes as well as certifications for individuals who have demonstrated competence with AWS are increasingly important," said Adam Selipsky, vice president, Amazon Web Services. "The AWS Certification Program helps organisations identify that the employees, partners and consultants they depend on for their AWS solutions are well-versed in the best practices of building cloud applications on AWS and have the skills to help them be successful."

The AWS Certification Program offers the following benefits:

  • Helps organisations to identify engineering and/or IT staff with the skills and technical knowledge necessary for building and maintaining solutions on the AWS Cloud;
  • Tests an individual's IT skills and technical knowledge are in alignment with AWS's architectural best practices for building highly secure and reliable cloud applications;
  • Increases differentiation for AWS Partner Network (APN) members that have AWS Certified individuals on staff;
  • Allows technical professionals to develop, certify and advertise their expertise with cloud computing on AWS.

Aside from establishing credibility with employers and peers, individuals who pass the AWS Certification Exam are allowed to display the corresponding AWS Certified logo on business cards and resumes.

Seok Kyun Choi, head of the Samsung SDS training division, noted the many mission critical programmes running on the AWS Cloud across various business groups at Samsung. Hence, training with AWS has been considered a priority for the company.

"The new AWS Certification programme will allow us to recognise our employees who have expanded their skills as well as identify that the partners we are working with have solid knowledge in building AWS-based applications," the Samsung executive said.

For Joseph Coyle, chief technology officer, Capgemini, North America, "AWS Certifications will allow us to further differentiate our cloud computing practice in the market and provide an added level of assurance to our clients."
