15 intellectual property creators honoured at IPCC 2014: MDeC

The 9th edition of MSC Malaysia Intellectual Property Creators (IPCC) 2014 awards 15 teams with up to US$218,000.

The ninth edition of MSC [Multimedia Supercorridor] Malaysia Intellectual Property Creators (IPCC) 2014 awards has honoured 15 teams with up to RM760,000 [US$218,000] for their talents, announced the organiser national ICT agency Multimedia Development Corporation [MDeC].

This year's IPCC competition, themed 'I Love Comedy', attracted more than 180 entries from the local creative content industry, including animation, casual games and digital interactive comics. Also, for the first time since the inaugural IPCC in 2006, IPCC opened submissions to cities outside of the Klang Valley such as Kuching, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

During the opening address of the awards ceremony, MDeC's chief executive officer, Dato' Yasmin Mahmood, said, "We are delighted with the quality and level of entries that we received for MSC Malaysia IPCC 2014. Personally, I was impressed by the passion shown by the shortlisted candidates during the IPCC 2014 Pitching Day. Looking at the brilliant projects and ideas from the 38 candidates I am confident that Malaysia's creative content producers and animators have what it takes to bring their home grown IPs to the global market."

"Moreover, we also hope that this competition will encourage greater involvement of young creative and entrepreneurial talents who will play a prominent role in driving the industry's growth in the future," she said.

MSC Malaysia IPCC aimed to enhance locally created intellectual properties (IPs) by funding multimedia companies and individuals, whether professional or amateur, with creative talent to take their ideas to the next level.

Following several IPCC Awareness Workshops, conducted in August to September of this year, which were attended by a total of 400 individuals, there was a 50 percent increase in submissions for the Casual Games category.

Fifteen (15) projects were hand-picked as winners by international judges from Mobile Entertainment Forum, The Walt Disney Company and Google Inc and local judges that include: Media Prima, Astro, Perbadanan Kota Buku, Astro GOPlay, International Game Developers, Malaysia Chapter and Ideate Media.

The grants have been increased to encourage more participation and enhance the quality of submissions. The grant recipients in each of the categories will also receive consultancy from industry heavyweights that will further help them turn their ideas into reality. Additionally, finalists will also be granted access to MSC Malaysia Animation and Creative Content Centre's (MAC3) facilities.
