In order to achieve this, 69 percent said that they would focus on significantly increasing their visionary and coaching attributes. They are also "generally enthusiastic about leveraging the digital opportunity, where the level of business success an organisation can achieve in the digital era is clearly predicated on the level of digital vision and leadership the organisation possesses."
Aligning digital with the overall IT strategy
The first question that any CIO should be asking is, "How will the digital strategy align with the overall IT strategy and road map?" If we look at the role of digital in business, there is a blurring that's occurring between physical and digital interactions. Tasks that previously required human interaction can now be done through the use of technology. A good example of this shift is in the area of customer support, particularly with new mobile apps and interfaces.
There has been a rapidly increasing percentage of mobile penetration among emerging Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and The Philippines, especially among the current generation of mobile-savvy youths. This could be highly representative of an entirely new customer demographic that wants to be reached out to in this way. Social data, business intelligence and big data can be leveraged, based on experiences customers have had in the past with an application interface, or the broader customer support experience.
Taking up the mantle of leadership
Sid Deshpande, principal research analyst at Gartner said: "It is clear that CIOs in the region have the opportunity to establish themselves as digital leaders in the eyes of the CEO and business leaders." He went on to say: "They should sponsor and foster innovation and experimental projects around mobile, analytics and cloud, while providing visibility to such efforts among the business leadership of their organisation."
Where technology was once simply an enabler for businesses to function, it has risen to become a key asset that provides significant advantage. We are already in the midst of a revolution where CIOs in Asia are taking up the mantle to be drivers of change in the digital and business landscape.
