Microsoft scores against Android by relinquishing control of Windows

At Microsoft's Build developer conference, Microsoft gave up control of its Windows 8 royalties for devices with screens smaller than 9 inches.

Nadella is reinventing Microsoft's mobile offerings. He has nothing to lose, because the company's approach to mobile under Ballmer treated mobile like the desktop wasn't working. This is a bold move, and if he keeps his word to innovate at a rapid pace, Nadella and Microsoft could become a mobile contender instead of an also-ran. It's a big change in attitude - from trying to control mobile to letting go and helping mobile grow.
