Corporate leaders aren't prepared for the Internet of Things

Nick Jones and Stephen Kleynhans of Gartner | May 5, 2015
According to Gartner's survey, there is a clear need for more internal education and ideation at all levels in the organisation to explain the potential of the IoT and to seek innovative ways to exploit it.

Steps to Prepare for the IoT
We recommend that organisations enact the following steps to prepare for the IoT:

  • Appoint an individual to head up IoT initiatives and act as a technical and business focus for the domain.
  • Educate the organization on the IoT to improve general understanding at all levels of the organization, especially among staff in nontechnical roles. This will help the organisation improve its understanding and identify opportunities.
  • Begin skills planning immediately, if you expect the IoT to impact you in the short term, to identify which new skills will be required and to find staff and sourcing partners.
