BLOG: Transformation with the Software-Defined Data centre

A Software-Defined approach towards data centre computing can enable organisations to move beyond traditional IT complexity and rigidity caused by specialised hardware.

Cloud computing has evolved far beyond being merely a buzzword in Asia Pacific. It has evolved into a source of competitive advantage in business today. In fact, as businesses in the region forecast business growth, they are seeing cloud computing as an integral part of their corporate and IT strategy.

As seen from the results of the VMware Cloud Index 2012, a study commissioned by VMware and conducted by Forrester Consulting in October 2012, more companies are recognising cloud computing as an enabler to their businesses. Seventy-three percent of Singapore respondents expect their company to grow/expand in 2013, while 77 percent said they see cloud computing as a top priority investment and highly relevant to their businesses. In fact, almost seven in 10 respondents (69 percent) believe that failure to implement cloud initiatives could result in their organisation falling behind the competition. Shifting CIO priorities require IT to run as a business

However, as the demand for cloud computing initiatives continue to increase, CIOs and IT departments are also starting to see their roles evolve. Instead of being solely a builder of services, they are now required to be IT leaders who drive substantive change throughout the entire organisation. This means IT departments can no longer operate as cost centres, but must employ service-based IT thinking to positively impact a company's bottom line by way of shared services.

One of the goals of cloud computing is to provide self-service for corporate users and IT-as-a-service. This means that IT will instead have to pay for itself through the services it 'sells' to its corporate users. Thus the department really will have to be its own business, understanding its costs and charging back to the business lines appropriately, all while maintaining SLAs and other service qualities that any 'paying' customer of a business would expect.

In this new era of cloud computing, organisations need to take a holistic approach to planning, building and operating their infrastructure.
