One possible opportunity that network operators can explore is to use mobile devices as a micropayment identity. Using near field communication technologies, the location of a mobile device can be used as a means of identity verification assuming that the mobile device is close to the point where the transaction is taking place. Network operators in turn can charge payment agencies a nominal amount for identity verification through 'location verification' services.
For these revenue streams to be effective, network operators must ensure their networks are location enabled. The next step is to create or join a mobile location broker service that insulates app store developers from having to interconnect and settle with multiple operators around the globe. Location information for identity verification is a highly tradable commodity that network operators can earn revenue from once it has been monetised.
