The survival of bookstores is also necessary for the ongoing success of online retailers like Amazon.com. Recently, a piece, Here's how Amazon self-destructs, in The Salon made a point about book discovery (how readers learn about new books in the market). The writer argued that if Amazon puts bookstores out of business, it will destroy the main way readers learn about new books to buy.
Clearly, there is not only a social case for creating a conducive environment for the survival of bookstores. There is a business case too.
