If there's one Apple related rumor that just won't die, it's the long-rumored Apple HDTV. Indeed, rumors of Apple releasing a dedicated HDTV set go back many years. The reality, though, is that the HDTV market isn't exactly in desparate need of innovation. What's more, the margins on HDTVs aren't as high as the margins Apple typically enjoys on its other products.
Nonetheless, there is a very real battle going on for control of the living room and rumors of Apple throwing its hat into the TV ring seem to be growing increasingly louder.
Most recently, Digitimes, which I should point out has rather spotty track record when it comes to Apple rumors, reported on Thursday that Apple may be interested in purchasing 55 and 65-inch Ultra HD TV panels from LG.
Rumors are circulating in the market that Apple is interested in purchasing 55- and 65-inch Ultra HD TV panels from LG Display.
However, the rumors state that Apple is still testing the technology and has yet to finalize its orders with LG.
Apple is also considering purchasing Ultra HD TV from Sharp, the report notes.
Now in case you haven't seen the wonder that is Ultra HD TV, I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's the best picture quality you'll ever see. Just hop on over to a local Best Buy and take a look for yourself.
The problem, however, is that there just simply isn't a sufficient amount of content available that can take full advantage of Ultra HD TV screens. Another issue is price. While one can find a solid 65-inch LED for under $2,000, Ultra HD TVs are much more expensive. By way of comparison, a 65-inch Sony 4K TV will set you back nearly $7,000. While pricing is sure to come down in the coming years, it's still a rather expensive product to expect Apple to put out on the market anytime soon.
