Nimsoft: Be prepared for the new workforce

CIO Asia speaks to Lokesh Jindal, Senior Vice President (Strategy & Business Development) of Nimsoft to find out how CIOs should be prepared for the next-generation workforce. 

The role of the CIO has certainly changed, since the nature of business has changed, said Lokesh Jindal. “It's no longer a question of alignment; CIOs need to be hand-in-glove with the business. The time the CIO spends should not be on trying to focus on building his or her own datacentres and managing them — that part should be automated; almost a no-brainer. The time should be spent on deciding what services the business needs to drive more revenue.”

Lokesh added that CIOs should be concerned with how quickly they could get access to those services for the business. Rather than thinking in a linear fashion, wondering if a new service would take 18 months to build and deploy, they need to be thinking about how parts or components could be deployed as a cloud service, complementing services which the datacentre can deliver, and how the CIO can architect it in a way that it becomes a seamless service to the business in three months rather than in 18 months. 

“The time for such [long duration] projects is gone; nobody is going to wait that long,” Lokesh emphasised. “You want it up and running in a month’s time. That’s the focus that a CIO needs to have. His role is almost like a supply chain manager, because some services are still delivered from the datacentre but a lot of the services are delivered from outside. If he doesn't become the supply chain manager, then business will go around him and buy the services it needs anyway.” 

Lokesh further added that CIOs should be mindful of what are the new ways in which they can accelerate the delivery of services to the business. “Stop thinking about how much longer to take me to build it and start thinking about how much faster can I make that service accessible to the business,” he said. “In some cases, the right answer will be building, and some cases the right answer will be to procure, and some cases, it will a mixture of them. The focus would be, how do I architect it, so that I still have visibility across — similar to managing a visible supply chain.”
