Telco operator NTT is officially unveiling a data centre located at the North Serangoon suburb in Singapore tomorrow.
Built to Tier 3 specifications, the data centre building stands at five floors high and offers 5,000 sq m of rack space, with some 2,500 racks. Completed since the beginning of the year, the facility is already housing data from companies mainly from the financial services vertical.
The data centre clinched the Green Mark Platinum award from regulator agency Building & Construction Authority (BCA), making it the first data centre in Singapore to attain such an award, according to Theodoric Chan, COO, NTT Singapore.
"The data centre has a power usage effectiveness rating of 1.5, with the standard score among similar facilities in Singapore ranging from 1.6 to 1.8," said Chan. PUE measures the energy efficiency of a data centre by dividing the total power consumption of the data centre, including cooling and lighting systems, by the power consumption of IT systems.
The roof top of the building has plant landscape features, while generators and chillers are located there as well, all to help reduce solar gain. The facility uses recycled industrial water extensively, and collects rainwater for landscape irrigation.
The data centre building has dual incoming power feeds, UPS units and generators, all fully redundant.
Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units are deployed with full redundancy and separated from server rooms to allow maintenance to be carried out without compromising security to customer's equipment. Within the server rooms, the racks are arranged in a hot and cold air aisle layout for cooling, and containment systems are used to prevent mixture of both types of air.
The Singapore data centre is hooked up with a counterpart located in the Cyberjaya region in Malaysia, forming a dual hub that provides customers a disaster recovery option, said Chan.
And the Singapore data centre will connect to NTT's Asia Submarine Cable Express, scheduled to be completed by mid-year, linking NTT's data centres in Japan, Philippines and Malaysia. By the end of the year, the connection will extend to NTT's data centre in Hong Kong as well. The undersea cable's total carrying capacity runs at 15 terabits per second.
